SHELTER – jaap van den elzen

  1. a place that provides temporary protection against danger or bad weather.
  2. a sheltered or safe environment; protection.

The dynamic light art installation “Shelter” guarantees an immersive experience. The cage-like structure strikes a balance between providing protection and confining you. You are invited to enter the installation and engage with the artwork; the light entices you into the cage.

You become a part of it as if in a performance, with the installation as the stage. Are you a spectator or an actor? Are you inside or still outside? Step into an immersive, all-encompassing dialogue of sounds and colors and escape the hustle and bustle of the city for a moment; a breath of fresh air.

The Moreelsebrug is like a balcony that lets you gaze out over the surroundings. However, you would only otherwise come to this corner if you take the elevator to another floor. Take a look from “Shelter” over the surroundings for a new experience.

“By placing ‘Shelter’ in the public space, we literally encourage you to see things differently; the urban environment is illuminated in a ‘new light’ and transformed into a place for imagination, wonder, surprise, or amazement.”

ARTIST: JAAP VAN DEN ELZEN

The Netherlands

Jaap van den Elzen was born in 1977 and grew up in Boxtel. He rode his skateboard from high school to the Design Academy Eindhoven, where he successfully graduated in 2004. From the City of Light – Eindhoven – he emerged as a light artist. Commissioned by companies, governments and private individuals, he creates light installations that cross boundaries. His field of work is diverse: museums, festivals or public space. At each location, the environment becomes part of his light art. From architectural structures to waving trees to casual passers-by: they all play a role in his creations. His work is known for the immersive sensory experiences it provides. Visitors are enveloped and immersed. Despite the often abstract nature of his work, where geometric shapes play the leading role, he draws his inspiration from nature.

For Shelter, Van den Elzen worked together with componist Augusto Meijer.
