URBAN TRANSFORMATION

For almost two decades, the beautiful city of Utrecht has been undergoing an inspiring urban transformation. This adventure began with the restoration of the Catharijnesingel, followed by the opening of the iconic TivoliVredenburg and the modern makeover of the Hoog Catharijne shopping center. Utrecht Central Station is the beating heart of these changes. The area now feels familiar, but less than a decade ago, it underwent a complete transformation.

This station, with its 57 million annual travelers, is not only the main hub of our rail network but also a crucial lifeline of the Netherlands. However, the station area is more than just a transit hub. It is a vibrant mix of work, living, and shopping. Impressive residential towers, modern offices, inviting recreational spaces, and green oases are springing up, as seen at Wonderwoods in the future Beurskwartier.

This large-scale transformation brings a breath of fresh renewal but also challenges in terms of affordable housing, accessibility, nature, environment, and safety. The functions of areas are changing, affecting everyone who lives and works in the city. Parts of the city disappear and sometimes lie dormant for years, waiting for what is to come. New pieces of Utrecht emerge for exploration, offering a different perspective on the city. I Light U evolves with the station area and guides you through some of these new parts of Utrecht to discover.

A Unique Perspective on Transformation

In January 2024, I Light U introduces its own temporary addition to the station area with a light art exhibition. The artworks encourage you to see the environment differently or to be carried away by the artists’ ideas about transformation in the station area. With a curious eye, the selected artists reflect on the theme of ‘Urban Transformation.’ Take a leisurely stroll past the artworks, be surprised by new insights, and linger a bit longer in places where you might otherwise rush through.

We look forward to welcoming you at I Light U 2024!
