insecta esthetica
Eline Flick | HKU X
This artwork is an ode to insects. For artist Eline Flick, these creatures are nature’s masterpieces, the true marvels of the animal kingdom. She highlights their unique shapes, spectacular colors, and intricate details. But insects deserve our attention and admiration for another reason: they play an essential role in our ecosystem. We may see them, but we rarely notice the work they do as an almost invisible force. Insects spread pollen, serve as food for other animals, and act as nature’s “clean-up crew.” That’s why we need to lend them a hand, for example, by creating an insect hotel like the one here at The Green House.

Eline Flick creates art installations that allow the beauty of nature to be experienced on multiple levels. Her work narrates a story from the perspective of nature, which she translates into art. She views her creations as a voice for the natural world, providing humanity with insights into how to care for it effectively. While science reveals the state of nature, Eline believes art offers a way to make this truth visually comprehensible. Through her work, she aims to raise awareness and convey important messages to the wider public. Eline Flick is a graduate of HKU.
ALIVE according to the artist
What makes an insect an insect is its six legs. This defining feature often turns them into “creepy-crawly” creatures in our eyes. For many, the only way to observe insects closely is by taking away their movement.
With this projection, I restore the insects’ movement and essence, letting them live once more through light and motion. Insects are not just tiny creatures; they are vital to life on Earth, pollinating plants, decomposing matter, and maintaining the balance of ecosystems.
Insecta Esthetica is a reminder that we need them to be alive.
