For almost two decades, the beautiful city of Utrecht has been undergoing an inspiring urban transformation. This adventure began with the restoration of the Catharijnesingel, followed by the opening of the iconic TivoliVredenburg and the modern makeover of the Hoog Catharijne shopping center. Utrecht Central Station is the beating heart of these changes. The area now feels familiar, but less than a decade ago, it underwent a complete transformation.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

In January 2024, I Light U introduces its own temporary addition to the station area with a light art exhibition.\u00a0 With a curious eye, the selected artists reflect on the theme of ‘Urban Transformation.’\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Shadeshifting is an abstract drawing of light, shadow, and color, a representation of the shadow play of an ever-changing city. This installation reflects the rapid transformation of the station area.<\/p>\n

The surveillance cameras that project the poem on the wall used to belong to the city of Utrecht and have been transformed in this work from being invisible watchers, to parts of an artwork illuminating a dark corner of the city.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Between the stairs of the Moreelsebrug on the Jaarbeurs side stands a tower of light in scaffolding. The scaffolding serves as a beacon of light symbolizing the city’s transformation: a place under construction. The vertical lines of light collectively form a space and establish a relationship with the immediate surroundings of the artwork.<\/span><\/div>\n
